‘Y’ is a nightmare!

It often gets muddled with ‘u’ and ‘w’. It makes different sounds in different words - like in ‘yes’ and ‘yo-yo’ we hear /y/ but we hear /ee/ in ‘happy’ and /igh/ in ‘sky’, and let’s not get started on the /i/ in 'gym'!

It can act as a vowel but isn’t a vowel, it’s hard to join up for handwriting AND it’s at the end of the alphabet so often gets forgotten! No wonder it’s a tricky one!

Here at The New Ways Learning Centre, we have FUN with the letter ‘y’. What better way to practise, than making a ‘yellow mummy that can fly’. We did sand writing so we can feel it’s shape, word exploration so we can hear its sounds, bandage decorating so we can see it in words and making a ‘mummy’ so we can learn with movement. This session is a truly fun and multisensory way to discover the tricky letter ‘y’.

And when we make mistakes, we celebrate them as learning opportunities on our way to becoming ‘y’ masters!
