Many of our autistic learners are non speaking - but that doesn't mean they have nothing to say...it just means we need to help them find a different way to say it!

We have been working with one of our youngest learners, to help him find ways to ask for the things he wants in a way that doesn't cause frustration to him or others around him. We supported him and his family to use the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) a little while back introducing it at its very earliest levels.

Now, he uses sentences strips to ask for the food he wants, the TV programmes he'd like to watch and the activities he loves for his choice time at the centre - and because we model speech at the same time he is using more and more recognisable speech sounds and starting to say some words too.
