Sometimes it’s hard to say if a vowel sound is long or short - but it’s important to know because many spelling patterns rely on this knowledge being automatic. So what if you can’t hear it…well…let’s feel it! Is it a short quick bounce, or a looooonnnngggg stretch?
Here our young learner is using phonological awareness and segmentation skills to break words into sounds, a multisensory activity to hear and feel the sounds, phonics to match the sound to its letter and then synthesis to build the sounds back into words. And this was only one learning job in her rammed packed hour of specialist teaching. Our distributed learning model, with the well researched and referenced Learning Hierarchy underpinning everything we do, helps learners to maintain and use their old learning alongside learning new skills.
